cities but if you live anywhere across the texas-oklahoma panhandle or parts of new mexico, northeastern new mexico, into colorado, that's where we're going to start to see very heavy snow and conditions going downhill overnight tonight, temperatures will go below freezing and in some cases, the wind chills will be downright dangerous. so ahead of the sun, that's where we're seeing the rain. you can see the bull's eye as i was saying across southeast colorado, northeast new mexico, into the panhandle of texas and objection, that's the bull's eye where we could see in excess of 18 inches of snow and blizzard conditions. like at -- look at this gust of 50 miles an hour. people are told to stay indoors the next 24 hours. up to 18 inches of snow and across the areas shaded in red, that's where we have blizzard warnings in effect. look at the wind gusts as we go through the evening, monday at 6:00 p.m., that's where we're going to see the wind gusts pick up in earnest, over 50 miles per hour as mentioned and then overnight tonight and into tuesday, it's going to start to settle down. so fairl

hunkered down in the nation's midsection. blizzard warnings from colorado to new mexico to texas. wind gusts have been clocked at 50 miles per hour and some areas reporting up to 15 inches of snow and a remarkable 200-mile stretch of interstate 40 is now closed from albuquerque to the texas state line. >> this storm is one of the strongest ones i've seen in years, basically because of the wind. >> they told me to turn back. >> let's get the latest on that road closure, shall we? >> reporter for cnn affiliate in albuquerque. the storm is winding down, what about the road conditions? improving at all? >> well, yeah, the road conditions in the metro area in albuquerque proper have actually improved. they're pretty drivable and it's once you get out of the city, you head east, that's where the big mess is. for 14 hours now, 14 hours is what we're going on. the i-40 eastbound lanes from the heart of the city all the way to the texas state line are still shut down. you can see we're here in front of one of the onramps and the gates are still locked, why? because the state police, new mexico

seriously injured in a two-vehicle accident in eastern new mexico near the texas border. authorities believe heavy snow and high winds are to blame. the storm is also being blamed for two deaths in colorado when a van lost control on an icy highway, with snow and wind and obscured the midwestern landscape, the southwest snow storm made its way east to kansas. in garden city, to the west, the storm slammed the heartland's highways affecting cars, suvs and tractor trailers alike all left stranded along the road. the blizzard started monday in new mexico, forcing the closure of multiple interstates around the town of ratone. >> they told us it's whiteout conditions. >> reporter: more than 150 mile of i-25 from santa fe to north colorado. >> even if they get past any of our checkpoints, they can't see. visibility is so poor that it makes it impossible to pass through that area. >> reporter: the prechristmas winter blast whipped through parts of texas and oklahoma where forecasters say up to 16 inches could fall on the panhandle by the end of today, bringing with it up to 35-mile-per-hour winds.
